Hand carved twisted olive wood salad servers featuring elephants.

    Natural treated olive wood

    Approximately 29cm long

These beautifully unique salad servers are hand carved from sustainable olive wood sources by artisans from the Kamba tribe in Machakos, Kenya, south east of Nairobi. Wood carving in Kenya provides valuable income to many people in local communities where paid employment can be very scarce. In these parts, olive wood is used in place of traditional non-sustainable timbers such as mahogany or ebony in a bid to aid in the reforestation of these timbers. The carvers from the Kamba tribe obtain permits and supplement their agricultural income through carving.

    About the Kamba Tribe

The Kamba People are an ethnic group that live in the semi-arid region of Eastern Kenya, Ukambani, primarily located in the district of Machakos. Their mother tongue is Kikamba, but many also speak Swahili, the Kenyan national language. Originally, Kamba People were hunter-gatherers, but these days many communities within the group make sustainable livings through agriculture and trade. The PachaMama Project’s Founder Natasha comes from Kamba heritage (Machakos).
