The PachaMama Project is committed to sustainability. Our concept of sustainability is not just limited to the environmental aspects of the way we do business. We take a holistic approach, working towards a more environmentally, socially and economically sustainable world. Read more here.

Environmentally, our products are handmade using traditional techniques, lowering the need for pollution-heavy machinery. The majority of our artisans use all natural and organic materials and dyes in their products. The rest are handmade from recycled materials, reducing the volume of materials sent to landfill.

Doing our part for the environment is important to us. We know that environmental sustainability is a vital aspect of ethical sourcing. We recognise that sustainability is not a short-term vision, nor is it a one way street. And ‘greenwash’ is the enemy of sustainability. We have experience on-the-ground working with communities in Ecuador and Argentina on sustainable development, agriculture, tourism and sustainable water projects.

We run a virtually paperless office. For this reason we do not use individual packaging for our products, apart from delicate items. We encourage customers to reuse or recycle all packaging and/or other materials related to our products. Apart from customer invoices and the occasional business card, all of our materials are electronic. We aim to reduce these ‘paper’ materials even further in the near future. All waste in our business is reused or recycled. Our electricity use is limited to basic needs.

We participate in the Danish Initiative CO2 Neutral Websites, which neutralises the carbon emissions from both the website and the users of the website by the building of new renewable energy sources, various Gold Standard certified and audited CO2 reducing projects and by the purchase of certified CO2 offsets, which are cleared by the relevant government institutions. See our certificate of participation here

We recognise the fact that movement of items results in carbon emissions being released into the atmosphere. We aim to offset each shipment of products we receive. As our product offerings grow, we are working towards providing a solution for our customers to voluntarily offset the carbon emissions related to their product and shipment.

Beyond our products, our blog offers information on relevant ethical, environmental and social issues from time to time.

More information on materials used can be found in individual collections.
